Nastia & Derek AND Riker & Allison:

Riker & Allison / Nastia & Derek

TIE for First Place!!

Samba Rolls and Swiveling, Salsa Hips collided Monday evening as an Epic Battle of the "Houghs" unfolded, spicing  up the ballroom for DWTS' Season 20 Latin Night!

Riker & Allison

Nastia & Derek

Look out, Derek  Hough, because there appears to be some seriously bad-out dancing skillz  pulsating through your family tree!

(Props absolutely must go out to Allison, BTW, for her excellent choreography!)

Riker jumps over Allison

I'll admit that up until Monday (Latin Night - Week 3) I still had my doubts as to whether or not Riker would be able to hold his own against his five-time-mirror-ball-winning professional cousin (even after last week's performance, when  Riker looked four times as much the contender!) but the team of Riker Lynch & Allison Holker shut (and once again dropped open some) mouths last night when they fired up the ballroom and Riker danced his best dance to date; setting the night's standard of  34 points with an amazing Salsa!

Not to be outdone, however, Nastia Liukin & Derek Hough readily met the young pop-rocker's challenge and closed out the show by matching the highest score with their dynamic Samba!

Nastia & Derek - Latin Night

Derek's choreography was, as usual, Latin perfection.

BTW, did anyone else catch the unreal moment when the couple literally RE-WOUND a part of the Dance?!

If Bruno Tonioli won't say it, I will; apparently, Nastia has a nasty side!  She totally killed it!!

REVIEW:  Patti & Artem

Patti & Artem:

Patti LaBelle and Artem Chigvintsev came out and danced the
Cha-Cha!

I really enjoyed this next dance, it was fun, lively and full of rhythm!

Patti & Artem

It made me smile ... how could it not?!  I got a chance to see
Patti LaBelle play a little ham-bone!

Patti LaBelle plays a little ham-bone during
her Week 3 dance (The Cha-Cha)!

I thought that the judges had under-scored this dance as well.

Patti's technical ballroom steps were, admittedly, no better than before; but, the dance's entertainment value was better than ever!  And what would have easily earned Patti all or mostly 7's the week previous, following the standard the judges themselves set for this Season, was suddenly lightly esteemed and deemed no higher than a 6 ... I'm just sayin' from a completely objective perspective, that's not fair.

REVIEW:  Willow & Mark

Willow & Mark:

Willow Shields and Mark Ballas (or, "Willow Shields and Jack Frost", as a joking Tom Bergeron remarked) danced the Paso Doble - Fire & Ice !!

Willow & Mark Dance The Paso Doble - Fire & Ice!

Once again, Willow's dancing exhibited a level of maturity and depth with which I had not previously credited her.

I'm not saying that this dance was not without some flaws; and, it wasn't that this Paso Doble was the best the show has ever seen or anything.  It was that this 14-year-old came out and shocked us all with her fierceness of attitude and her really-good technical know-how!

Willow & Mark

To quote head judge, Len Goodman, " ... first Paso of the season ...
I don't fancy the others!"

And it must be said, in favor of Mark's brilliant and fun choreography (although, I did find that the theme of the dance ran a little hot and cold ... get it?), Mark was totally on his game Monday night with his age-appropriate routine and some (seriously) fancy foot-work!

Nice going, Mark!

REVIEW:  Robert & Kym

Robert & Kym:

Well! ... I don't think that this next couple's performance will be helping to quiet any of the rumors that have been recently flying about concerning their dating status!

Robert & Kym get close during their romantic Rumba.

Robert Herjavec and Kym Johnson's Latin Night Rumba was like a gentle breeze that swept across the ballroom floor ... romantic, softly flowing, and just right!

Robert & Kym

Kym's choreography was positively perfect for this routine, and Robert's dancing was really good!

He led the dance beautifully (as was noted by Judge Julianne Hough when she said, " ... you were leading her, that was awesome!").

Absolutely splendid!

REVIEW:  Chris & Witney

Chris & Witney:

Going into last Monday's anticipated Latin Night, little did anyone suspect that the evening would hold such promising and breath-taking success for the team of Chris Soules and Witney Carson, as shown when they danced their Argentine Tango!

Chris & Witney

With its gripping, beautiful, dramatic and exciting steps (choreographed by the very talented Witney, of course!) this dance seized the attention of the ballroom with its plethora of wow-did-you-see-that moments!

Chris & Witney's beautiful Argentine Tango

Chris' excellent dancing invoked a fair amount of praise from the judges' panel ... Julianne Hough dubbed Chris as " ... the come-back king!" and, as was described by  Carrie Ann Inaba, " ... you were powerful, you were magnificent!".  Even Len Goodman showed no small amount of admiration when he observed, " ... you did what you were supposed to do ... the best dance you've done!"

Chris & Witney Season 20 Week 3 dancing The Argentine Tango

Nevertheless, the final scoring of the dance was in perfect keeping with the judges' harsh (and, in my opinion, somewhat unjust) attitude that was displayed the entire night!

Chris Soules & Witney Carson

Oh well, maybe the judges will lighten up a little by next week!

DWTS Season 20, Week 03

REVIEW:  Suzanne & Tony

Suzanne & Tony:

Suzanne Somers totally Carmen Miranda-ed it for  Latin Night when she and her professional dancing partner, Tony Dovolani, danced a colorful Samba!

Suzanne & Tony Season 20, Week 03 - Latin Night

Sporting a ridiculously over-sized fruit hat, in hilarious keeping with the evening's theme, (about which, Tom Bergeron joked, "Suzanne's head is part of a balanced diet!") Suzanne's dancing may not have been much to look at from a technical aspect, but, well, I think that Len Goodman put it best when he quipped, "That was a bit like your headdress:  juicy, fruity and full of fun!"
