According to abc.com, Alek is an "Army National Guard Specialist" who "became a worldwide hero in August when he helped avert a massacre aboard a Belgian train. While on vacation after a deployment in Afghanistan, the 22-year old sprang into action when an armed attacker began shooting on the train. Alek and two of his friends, Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone and student Anthony Sadler, disarmed and subdued the attacker, who was armed with guns and a box cutter."
In grateful recognition of his heroic actions, Skarlatos, along with Stone, Sadler, and a British Businessman named Chris Norman, who helped to foil the attacker's attempts, was met by French President, Francois Hollande, who made the brave men Chevaliers (Knights) of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, a French Order that was established in 1802, and the Country's highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Civilian or Military personnel. who has spent the last Four Seasons dancing in DWTS’ Troupe. This will be Lindsay’s second run as a Pro, the first time being with Season 16 contestant, Victor Ortiz, with whom she finished in 8th place.
