Team Dances – Review of DWTS Season 21, Week 07

DWTS Season 21, Week 07

REVIEW:  Team Dances

History was made last Monday evening within the DWTS Ballroom, when the unthinkable happened and Derek Hough’s long-standing, 13-Season Record of having NEVER lost a Team Dance was broken.

Tragically “broken” at that, as the circumstances surrounding the event were so very far from “Fair”...

Team Nightmare:

Kicking off the always exciting round of Team Dances was Team Nightmare with the dancing of one “monster” of a Freestyle to “This is halloween” by Danny Elfman.

“ … Basically, we’re having this spooky-@$$ dinner and we’re monsters.”  Explained Pro Valentin Chmerkovskiy in the Team’s pre-dance Rehearsal Package … Well, kudos then, Val, because that is exactly what you pulled off!

Nothing less (but nothing more either); however, what little there was - in terms of choreography - was very well done, indeed!

Now, don’t get me wrong ... Team Nightmare’s efforts were generally very enjoyable with the ‘round the table, in-sync segments being eerily effective, and the Team’s solos being - for the most part - just the right amount of wacky and weird!

In addition, I found it rather brilliant for this Team to take a page from the one-and-only Derek Hough (who had never lost a Team Dance, mind you) and throw any unnecessary “Dance” and “Great, Big, Fun Show” out the window in order to impress the judges with a long string of “Look at how in-sync we are!” Movements!

Of the Celebrities participating in the performance, I found Hayes Grier’s dancing to have been - oddly enough, considering his fellow, creepy cohorts - the best; but, that may just be because his current Teenage lanky and gawky state was just right for this routine!  And I found Tamar Braxton’s to have been the worst, as her lazy Movements and unfinished Lines proved yet again to be her ultimate undoing within the dance.

Regardless, Team Nightmare succeeded in earning a perfect score of all 10’s from the judges … a scoring I cannot begrudge them as their Team Freestyle was very good; and furthermore, it can hardly be called their fault that the Team following them, Team Who You Gonna Call?, danced a dance so great and detailed that it just completely overshadowed this performance …

Team Who You Gonna Call:

Ladies and Gentlemen, kicking @$$, taking Ballroom names, and inferring the blunt question, “Why did the other Team even BOTHER showing up?”, it’s Team Who You Gonna Call? with the dancing of one truly FANTASTIC Freestyle to “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker, Jr. !!

Seriously now, folks, let’s be real here, Team Nightmare’s comparatively meager efforts were quite literally child’s play (Sorry, Hayes, but I still think that you did the best, sooo …) when danced next to THIS routine!

From the purely-genius choreography, to the incredible in-sync segments, to the gratifyingly-gripping “ghost-capturing” solos, this Team Dance is most definitely one for the show’s record books, and deservedly rates with the likes of some past true DWTS Greats, such as Season 17’s Team Foxing Awesome, Season 19’s Team Creepy, and Season 20’s Team Trouble!!

“Wowser-bowser!”, where do I even begin with the breaking down of this exhilarating performance??

How about with Alek & Lindsay's amazing Lifts,

Yesiree, no doubt about it, when comes to top-notch, totally obliterating (Sorry, Team Nightmare), Freestyling Team Dances, who ARE you gonna call?  Why … <Record Scratch> … Wait, WHAT?  Hold the phone … 9’s?! …  REALLY?!!  Are you freaking kidding right now??!!

Tell me something, Judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, have y’all actually crossed over to just being completely bonkers, because that is so (so, so, SO) messed up!
