DWTS Elimination: Doug & Karina – Season 22, Week 06

Doug Flutie and Karina Smirnoff  ELIMINATED
on Dancing With The Stars

So, Football's Famed Flutie received the rather negative context of the familiar words "Kick Off" on Monday, when he was Eliminated Week 06 following a regrettably low-scoring Bollywood Number as part of Season 22's Famous Dances Night event.

Doug & Karina - Eliminated
DWTS Season 22, Week 06

Still, it seems that the beloved Sports Star bore no ill will regarding the evening's turn out, remarking upon his exit - amid the emphatic chanting of his Last Name from members of the show's Live Audience - "… It's been an unbelievable experience!  … Thank you, guys, so much!"

Doug Flutie

DWTS Season 22, Week 06

REVIEW:  Doug & Karina

“Guys, all those ‘Hits’ are on the ‘Jai - Ho!’s!” Flutie instructed during his pre-Dance Rehearsal Package, when seemingly correcting his Week 06 Back-up, Troupe Dancers.

… Too bad that while “Teaching” his too-nice group of Professional Dancers how to move he didn’t pick up on a few of those tips himself!

Dancing a Bollywood Dance to “Jai Ho!” from Slumdog Millionaire, Football Legend, Doug Flutie, and his Professional partner, Karina Smirnoff, presented their Famous Dances Routine.

Well, folks, and while I may prefer and enjoy a Happy Ending as much as the next DWTS Fan, it seems that poor (and might I just add) slightly Deluded Doug was destined for a more harsh and realistic conclusion to his Dancing Season, going home on his absolute WORST Performance to date!

- Famous Dances Night

I really don’t think that Doug’s  lack of ability to fully grasp the concept of Dancing vs. Going Through/Stomping Out the Motions was ever MORE apparent within this Season then it was on Monday night!

Heavy Footwork, some Stiff Movement and Lines, and a Depressingly Dragging Sense of Musicality brought what might have been a purely Fun and Athletic Number to an Uncomfortable-to-watch-Status, effectively making this already-Famous (hence the evening’s theme), Bollywood Exhibition into a positively Painful, Boring, and (Dare I say it?) more-than-a-little-Ugly Display!

“Uh, [I’m] disappointed,” Doug expressed - following his own Performance - upon receiving a Judges’ Scoring of all “7”s for his Dance, “because I didn’t think we were missing steps; or I didn’t think I was missing steps, I thought it was clean!”

Well, I guess that we should all be grateful then, that Doug's version of "Clean" isn’t what actually flies within the world of Dance or else, honestly, why would anyone ever bother???

Doug & Karina – Review of DWTS Season 22, Week 04

DWTS Season 22, Week 04

REVIEW: Doug & Karina

Dancing a terrifically fun Jazz to “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins, Football Legend, Doug Flutie, and his Professional partner, Karina Smirnoff, presented their Disney Night Routine!

Doug & Karina
DWTS Season 22, Week 04
Disney Night

Well, apparently, it seems that just a spoonful of sugar will help the medicine go down, as whatever this fun and fresh Jazz Number may have lacked in Technical Execution, it MORE than made up for with a sweet amount of Playful, Performing Pizzazz and, of course, that all important Disney-like Quality!

DWTS Season 22, Week 04
Disney Night

I mean to say, I positively adored this Routine!!

But then again, honestly, who wouldn’t have adored it?  It was just so purely … Oh, what is that word? … “Happy”!!

DWTS Season 22, Week 04
Disney Night

(You know, Guest Judge, Zendaya Coleman, that warm and pleasant feeling that just seems to immediately evaporate out the Ballroom’s atmosphere whenever you speak …)

True, this delightful Dance did see more than its fair share of mounting errors throughout the course of the performance, including but not limited to:  some sloppy footwork, some lifts gone slightly awry (Although major kudos, Doug, for pulling through both times, and finishing the Lifts anyway!), and what seemed like some kind of physical aversion to that other Mary Poppins’ timeless classic, “Step in Time”!

DWTS Season 22, Week 04
Disney Night

However, it must also it be said that, by Routine’s end, while Flutie’s Dancing had certainly displayed all of the above, it equally reigned as some of the fun-est of the evening, having been so scrumptiously preserved with an endearing amount of Proper Character Portrayal and Showmanship by Doug, and some seriously fantastic Choreography, courtesy of the ever-talented Karina, whose inclusion of Terrific Table-Top Tricks, both at the beginning and at the end of the Dance, one or two elements of too-cute Comedy, and those always-crowd-pleasing Judges’ Desk Kicks was in absolute PERFECT keeping with the Night’s Theme!

Disney Night

“I saw the makings of a good Routine,” voiced Panel Judge, Carrie Ann Inaba, when the Dance was over, “but I don’t think you actually delivered on it … and I feel terrible … I saw the intention, I could tell you put in the work, it just did not come together tonight.”

(A fair enough critique, Carrie Ann, although I can’t say that I appreciate the implication that this Routine just up and fell flat on its face either, instead of being recognized for the enjoyable showing that it was overall!)

“There were mistakes, you know, and that happens,” offered the 19-year-old, Zendaya (… Ah, good!  Here we go with a more sane perspective …), “… I think the number one thing is, always remembering that, when you’re on the stage, [to] like, [always be] ‘Channeling’ all that aggression, all that anger, all that ‘Upset’, and just, into ‘Disney Magic’!”

<Record Scratch!> Wait, WHAT?!  Am I crazy, or isn’t that JUST what Doug had already accomplished, only minutes ago???

“You know this is Disney,” the presumptuous TEEN continued, “this is Disney Night, [so] enjoy it!”

<Drumming Fingers> … That’s exactly what Doug did, you twit! … Still waiting, by the way, on an actual critique, or did you even have any accurate thoughts to offer on the current topic at all?!

“Take it from a ‘Disney Girl’ myself, sometimes, you know, there [are] times I’m mad, I’m angry, but I just, I channel that into positivity! …”

Oh!  Oh, now I see, you weren’t critiquing this Dance at all, were you, Zendaya?  (Or, if you were, you 100% FAILED miserably!)  But no! … It would appear to me that all that Channeling Crap and seemingly Genuine Gusto were all mere verbal ploys to afford your own, “Perfect” self the ultimate gratification of a Side-ways Compliment!

Good grief, girl (and while I feel pretty sure that, on Disney Night at least, the show would have set up one
or two Evil “Mirror, Mirrors on the wall, in the back of the building somewhere for vain individuals, such as yourself), would it be quite alright with you if the REST of us were to proceed with the critiquing and subsequent scoring of the ACTUAL PERFORMANCE AT HAND?!!

... Honestly, what a Self-serving, Self-aggrandizing ... !

“Well, what I liked,” began Head Judge, Len Goodman, with some sincerely voiced opinions on Doug & Karina’s Jazz, “You got right into the ‘Character’ of the Dance!  You made it fun, you made it entertaining, it was enjoyable to watch, it just got out of Sync a couple of times during the Routine, but, Doug, I dig it!”

Well, thank YOU, Len, and there we have it, folks … <Casting an arched glance in Zendaya’s general, misguided direction> … Len “dig”s it, so THERE!!

Doug & Karina – Review of DWTS Season 22, Week 03

DWTS Season 22, Week 03

REVIEW: Doug & Karina

Dancing a Waltz to “Rainbow Connection” as sung by Andra Day, Quarterback Legend, Doug Flutie, and his Professional partner, Karina Smirnoff, presented their most Memorable Year Routine.
(If you weren’t just 100% sobered by this next Week 03 Dedication, I’m pretty sure that there is definitely something wrong with you.)

Doug & Karina
DWTS Season 22, Week 03

In a wonderfully executed, emoting Performance, Doug’s Waltz (being so perfectly Choreographed by Karina) beautifully told the bittersweet story of Doug’s two Parents, Dick and Joan, and their life-long love for one another in an all-consuming, Fairy tale-like Romance that is rarely seen or heard of, outside of a storybook, within this modern era.

Doug & Karina
DWTS Season 22, Week 03

“… 2015 is a year I’ll never forget” recounted Flutie, in his pre-Dance Rehearsal Package, “Dad had been ill, and he was in rough shape.  After a week in the hospital, my father passed away.  Dad had passed.  Mom got up, walked over, gave him a kiss on the forehead, and then, fell forward and was gone.  … I had the opportunity to let my father know how I felt about him, [but] I didn’t have that opportunity with my mother.  The doctor said the only explanation is, what they call, ‘Dying of a Broken Heart’.  It’s a Family Tragedy, but it’s also an amazing Love Story.”

Doug & Karina
DWTS Season 22, Week 03

… An enchanting Performance overall, this Waltz also served to supremely showcase Doug’s Fine Lines, his Graceful Footwork, and his nicely-intact, Firm Frame that was held throughout the Dance.

Doug & Karina
DWTS Season 22, Week 03

Of course, there was that one, tiny little Misstep and subsequent Slip-up towards the close of the Routine; but, let’s face it, no one even cares.

A remarkable and moving job in the end, Doug, and one that was very well done.
